I’m Ya’Shalan, also lovingly referred to as Yaya,
a creative producer and video editor based in Chicago, IL.

I’ve made dozens of independent short videos ranging mediums, and have creatively produced since 2006. Here and now, I do a mix of everything within independent production.

I love a good experience design. My life's work requires heavy research, experiments, feedback, failure, and room to play. At every stage, I ask for feedback from art friends, as constructive critique is everything. They help me develop taste, so I can continue creating art – not "content".

Long-term, I'm building a better artist. It's crucial I practice responsible filmmaking, and as a writer-director, it's important for me to lead safe environments for actors and talent. With them, I'd love to create more impactful films that explore the feminine gaze, afrofuturism, and the many faces of mortality. My strongest desire is to create better tools for grief.

I make a living in the midwest while I write, and it's not unusual to see my name on a collaboration with friends + fam back in the Bay Area. I'll always make time for Oakland, CA.

Whenever you're ready, tell me what's good.
